Dx3 2017 Session Spotlight: The Future of Retail

Preparations are underway for Dx3 2017. One of the sessions for this year Reengineering Retail: The Future of Selling in a Post-Digital World will be presented by Doug Stephens, Founder and President of Retail Prophet, taking place on Thursday, March 9 (Day 2), from 10-10:30 AM at Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

dx3-2017-dougstephensA long-time partner of Dx3, Doug comes every year to share his thoughts and insights about the future of retail. With almost 30 years of experience working in the industry, from manufacturing to distribution and even small independent chains, Doug has seen the progression of retail through many different lenses. In 2009, he founded the Retail Prophet to help retailers understand the changes that were taking place and what it meant for consumer behaviour moving forward.

In addition to that, he also helps curate activations that happen on the Dx3 show floor. For the last few years, he has helped create the Retail Collectivewhich demonstrated how physical stores can be a powerful experience and media channel. Doug believes that we’re entering a new era of technology and retail, where innovations will transform the experience of visiting a physical store. As such, he’s assisting Dx3 in developing the Retail Innovation Challenge this year, a forum where retail companies and tech start-ups can bring what they’re working on and present their business concept on the show floor. From this pool, one retailer and one tech start-up will be chosen to set up a demo in Yorkdale Mall (or another Oxford Properties outlet) and debut their product to consumers in Toronto. These winners will also get a chance to pitch to the Retail Council of Canada’s Board of Directorswhich includes some of Canada’s largest retailers, and be featured in the Canadian Retailer magazine.

Known for his extensive research and unique perspectives on the retail industry, Doug is the author of two ground-breaking books: “Retail Revival: Reimagining Business for the New Age of Consumerism” and “Reengineering Retail: The Future of Selling in a Post-Digital World”. The first book, Retail Revival, discusses how massive economic shifts has drastically affected the industry and how retailers are coping with a new change. It attempts to makes sense of these changes, and projects characteristics of the era that retail will be entering.

The second book, Reengineering Retail, talks about how the industry is entering a new era where technology will enable a new breed of immersive online experience and physical stores will completely reinvent to become a form of experiential media. . It discusses the concept of physical stores versus online stores and attacks that discussion from both sides. With so many changes happening in tech, it will not be enough for retailers just to sell products in a store. They will be looking at ways to transform shopping experiences, and adapt to new consumer behaviours.

“We’ll be embarking on a new era of online shopping. Shopping will be more experiential and immersive than it is today. With technology like augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality, online shopping will feel more physical and real,” says Doug. “It will redefine the meaning of online shopping. At the same time, stores will become a powerful form of experiential media– an interactive gateway to the brand”

Reengineering Retail will launch at Dx3, right after Doug’s session on March 9 at 10:30 AM. Copies of his book will also be available online, closer to the date.
