Buytopia Tops Canada’s Fastest Growing Retailers 2014 List

Toronto’s Buytopia was named Canada’s fastest growing retailer in the Profit 500, leading a diverse list of shops – most of whom sell through online channels.

Among the top 10 are both brick-and-mortar, online, and omnichannel retailers. Notably, only three of the 10 do not sell online (though they do generate leads). It’s difficult to sell food or cars directly online, as Blush Lane Organic and Kapscomoto might testify, though for every other retailer, it seems to have become the standard to open online as either your first or second option along with a physical retail store.

Whether that means children’s accessories, hockey equipment, coffee or makeup, these businesses are growing through the online channel.

In June, Buytopia sold its couponing app SnapSaves to Groupon.

As Snapsaves and Buytopia co-founder Michele Romanow told Amber Mac at Dx3 2014, SnapSaves was created because the daily deal format doesn’t have the every-day usefulness of coupons.

“The problem with deals is that they’re fairly infrequent,” she said. SnapSaves, as Groupon undoubtedly deduced, is the sort of app that shoppers will use every day. Two of Buytopia’s executives were named among EY’s 2013 Entrepreneur Of The Year Award finalists.

D&D VEHICLE SALES INC. – Sells, leases and rents cars, trucks, trailers and automotive equipment (no online transactions)

NÉRON INC. – Designs and sells jewelry (sells online)

ECS COFFEE INC.  – Sells coffee equipment and supplies (sells online)

SPA BOUTIQUE LTD.  – Sells high-end spa products (sells online)

SNUGGLE BUGZ – Sells baby products through two retail outlets and an online storefront (sells online)

HOCKEYSHOT – Sells hockey training and skill-building products (sells online)

BLUSH LANE ORGANIC MARKET LTD. – Organic retail grocer and farmer (no online transactions)
